Glacier Formation Notes

Glaciers form in two basic areas, the north and south pole. They also tend to start in mountains where it is much colder and they get more snow. Although glaciers are usually in cold regions, there have been glaciers found around Africa. It's most likly like this because of plate techtonics and how Pangea used to be.

Glaciers are made from snow that has been there for thousands of years that has compacted into ice and then forms into a glacier. Each glacier starts out as a single snow flake that has attached to others until it's so heavy it turns to ice. They aren't like ice cubes that can melt and be frozen again. Glaciers are built over several hundred years. After a while, the snow becomes airtight, and then it freezes.

Glaciers move when they get too heavy to stay in one place. When a glacier moves it carves through mountains and valleys. After they pass through a valley they goes from a "v" shape to more of a "u" shape. When a glacier has left an area, it leaves sediments behind, and different land formations. It's almost like they are solid blocks of ice moving down hill, or as if it was a river made of pure ice. Many times after a glacier has passed it leaves a water collection at the bottom off the valley.

Although we are still in an ice age, global warming is comming our way to melt the ice that covers part of our world. When a glacier melts it increases the sea level. During the last ice age ice sheets extended from the polar regions to the mid-latitudes in the northern hemisphere and extending well beyond Antarctica in the southern hemisphere. It is possible that midlatittude ice sheets may return over the next 10,000 years.

Glaciers are the biggest collection of fresh water on Earth. They come to a close second with oceans. Right now the worlds largest glacier is a continent; it is Antarctica.

Waiting

Waiting for the moon to fade away so the sun can shine brightly.
Waiting for the snow to melt so the grass can grow green again.
Waiting for a baby to take its first breath.
Waiting for the song to end so we can learn the lyrics to a new one.
All of these things will happen, eventually.
Shine brightly, grow green, first breath, lyrics.
I am and forever will be waiting....

Book Review: Alphas

"Alphas," by Lisi Harrison, is a wonderful book. It talks about making new friends and betrayal. the alpha academy is a special school for talented girls. All the girls at the school all want to be one thing, the alpha. I think any girl my age would like this book.

In this book it talks about being a new girl, and making new friends. Being the new girl would be really hard, especially in a school like the alpha academy. It talks about one of the girls being scared to talk to anyone, I think that is what it would be like to be the new girl. I have never been a new kid so I don't know how it feels.

I like this book a lot. I would defiantly recommend it to any of my friends. The book talks about many of the things that we are interested in. Both in the book and outside of it, low grades are not acceptable. Any teenage girl would like this book. It's one of my favorites.

Do Not Fire The Nervous System

Dear Human Body Corporation:
Do not fire the nervous system, you'll die without it! The nervous system is the control center. Without the nervous system death would be everywhere. Reacting to the environment is important. Don't fire the nervous system.
The nervous system is the control center. Without this system we wouldn't know how to drink, eat, breathe, etc. If something were coming towards you, you wouldn't know to move or catch it. There would be no way of feeling, smelling, hearing or seeing. Parents control us, just as the nervous system controls our bodies. Do not fire the nervous system it's the control center.
If you want to die, fire the nervous system. You would be brain dead if were to fire this system. There would be no oxygen in your body. Without blood and oxygen, all of your cells would die. No one wants to die, don't fire the nervous system.
How would you react to the environment? Without the nervous system you wouldn't be able to react to anything. Let's say that something was on fire, you wouldn't know because you couldn't see it, hear it or smell. Yes feeling pain is bad, but not feeling anything can be a very bad thing. What if it were the middle of summer and you were to wear a parka, or the middle of winter and be wearing a swim suit? Without the nervous system you wouldn't have any senses.
Please, don't fire the nervous system. It's the control center. You will die without it. Reacting to your environment is important. No one wants to die, do not fire the nervous system.
Sincerely,
The Nervous System.
